6 Steps to a Successful Smartphone Website (part 6 / 7)

In the previous part of this blog series we created a list of requirements that can be used as a shopping list to purchase a WCMS that supports your mobile strategy. One of the requirements we discussed was a mobile previewer that allows you to visualize the content of you website in the different screen resolutions, but the content previewer is not a replacement for testing your software on the OS.

While the mobile previewer helps you when creating content, it does not replace the need for testing the features in your website in the OS which can be accomplished using an emulator. My recommendation is to use both, when adding new functionality test it using an emulator, but when adding or editing content, the previewer will be a very valuable resource.

Step 5 – Testing Smartphone Websites Using Emulators

Keeping up with demand and mobile trends is only half the battle for smartphone website administrators. They face the challenge of testing their website in different operating systems and browsers. Each OS is different and each has its own quirks that cannot be ignored.

From the administrator’s perspective, this is not only time consuming, but also expensive to consider a fair share of OS’s for testing. Unless you have a high budget, this is not going to be possible.

This is where device emulators and come in handy. For the purpose of this blog, a device emulator will be defined as an application that duplicates (or emulates) the functions of a mobile device running an operating system and a browser.

Emulators are easy to use, you just need to install an SDK or the emulator program and run it. The list of emulators to use is going to depend on the target audience but here is a list of the most popular ones:
